Research

The School of Molecular & Biomedical Science houses a range of vibrant research activities.  As would be expected in one of Australia’s premier biomedical research environments, we are a truly international community.

We provide a unique research environment that links undergraduate teaching and post-graduate research excellence, and this has consistently produced outstanding scientists in the areas of biochemistry, molecular genetics, microbiology, virology and immunology, who have attained national and international prominence in their fields.

The principal research areas in the School include an understanding of, and potential cures for, major diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders, developmental abnormalities, genetic and viral diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases, and bacterial infections.

The cutting-edge research conducted by over 40 major research groups is supported by the latest state-of-the-art infrastructure in genomics, proteomics, microscopy, whole animal imaging, flow cytometry, as well as a wide range of model systems.

The school is remarkably successful in obtaining competitive funding for its research activities, including a large number of national and international grants.

Members of the School participate in National Health & Medical Research Council Programsincluding the Australian Bacterial Pathogenesis Program. We are involved in the Australian Stem Cell Centre (ASCC), Australia's Biotechnology Centre of Excellence, the University of Adelaide Research Clusters in Healthy Ageing and Computational Neuroscience. The School also houses the ARC Network in Genes and Environment in Development (NGED). In the past, the School has collaborated with two Cooperative Research Centres (the former CRC for Tissue Growth & Repair and the CRC for Biological Control of Pest Animals) and has hosted the Australian Research Council (ARC) Special Research Centre for Molecular Genetics of Development.
