Human Diseases

At the Adelaide Zebrafish Facility, there are several studies being carried out on various human degenerative diseases, these include:

Other Research

Work being carried out by other researchers affiliated with the AZF include:

  • Vascular Development  - linked to diseases such as arthritis, atherosclerosis, and contribute to the formation of solid tumours
  • Molecular Signalling  - linked to cells changing from normal passive entities, into invasive cancer forming bodies
  • Hypoxia (oxygen starvation)  - linked to human diseases, including the restriction of blood flow to the brain and heart, increased blood pressure in the lungs, and cancer
  • Gene Regulation in the Nervous System  -  genes turned on or off at any one moment control the proper growth and maturation of an organism during development, and proper response to environmental changes as an adult
  • Humane Killing of Zebrafish  -  There is currently a large amount of debate as to what is the most appropriate manner for killing a Zebrafish that has reached the end of its usefullness in research facilities.  This work looks a a few alternate and equally popular methods, in an attempt to better understand the affects on the fish
