Remote Access to Data & Images

All instrumentation at Adelaide Microscopy is networked to a University of Adelaide server (Elise). Most instruments store data to the local drive on the instrument control computer. For these instruments data must be copied to the server so as to enable remote access to the data. Some instruments (XL20, XL30 and CM100) store data directly to the server. Data placed on the server remains on the server for a minimum of 4 weeks. After 4 weeks the data is archived to DVD and removed from the server. To access archived data contact a member of Adelaide Microscopy.

There are a number of ways of accessing data created on instruments at Adelaide Microscopy and placed onto the server.

1. Data can be copied directly from the instrument computer to a portable device such as a USB stick, CD or DVD. Data can also be copied to a portable device on any of the computers in the Adelaide Microscopy computer suite.

2. For University of Adelaide staff and students it is possible to directly connect to the server and copy data onto a local computer. It is also possible to access the data using the remote access system set up by ITS (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/its/online/file_print/files/remote/ ). Please see a member of Adelaide Microscopy staff for details of accessing data via the University of Adelaide network.

3. Data can be access worldwide by using an internet browser and connecting to the URL ftp://micros@129.127.49.6. Connection errors can occur for internet browsers that are not correctly set for FTP connection. The default settings of Microsoft Internet Explorer are correct for FTP access. Local firewalls may also prevent FTP connection. See a member of Adelaide Microscopy staff for FTP connection details and passwords if required.
