What is the difference between forums and threads?

A forum is topic driven. You set up separate forums for discrete topics. In order for discussions to occur within each topic/forum, a thread needs to be created. You have the choice of setting up forums which force students to reply to a thread that you have created (threaded discussion) or you can allow students to create their own threads and therefore start their own discussions within the forum.
