Date/Time: Wednesday, 8 July 2009, 9:15 am to 6:30 pm Location: The State Library of South Australia Cost: $33 waged, $22 students/unwaged More information: Visit website This one-day symposium 'Discovery and Empire: The French in the South Seas' will examine the role that scientific voyages to the south seas played in the French imagination and in that nation's quest to expand its empire and influence. Organised by the University of Adelaide's Discipline of French Studies and Flinders University, the symposium covers the Age of Discovery - from the early 16th century voyage of the Abbé Paulmier through to the scientific expeditions of the first part of the 19th century - and their subsequent fictional representations. The symposium is part of the XVIIth Biennial Conference of the Australasian Association of European Historians on 6-9 July.
