Date/Time: Wednesday, 7 July 2010, 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Location: Elder Hall More information: Visit website In this lecture, Professor Wang Hui will discuss how Orientalism has had an impact on the perception of Tibet and its history in the West and how political agendas and the focus on ethnicity lead to negligence of the socio-economic issues in Tibet. Presented by the Confucius Institute in conjunction with the 18th Biennial Conference of the Asian Studies Association of Australia. Professor Wang Hui is professor of Chinese literature and history at Qinghua University. Sent to compulsory "re-education" in a poor inland province after the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, Wang Hui is a leading member of China's "New Left" movement and a past editor of Dushu, one of China's most influential intellectual journals. In May of 2008, Foreign Policy named him as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world. In "China's New Order: Society, Politics, and Economy in Transition" (2006), Wang Hui offers a powerful analysis of China and the transformations it has undertaken since 1989, critiquing the country's economic reforms, social polarization, and political corruption. His most recent book in English is "The End of the Revolution: China and the Limits of Modernity" (2009). Admission is free but registration is essential.
