Déjà vu all over again: what next for universities?
In search of the way forward for universities, Professor Bebbington ranges from Wikipedia to the 18th-century encyclopaedias, from global 'big science' research institutes to Californian community colleges. He finds the challenges facing universities today replay those that their German precursors faced 200 years ago.
Will success in the near future require a renewed commitment to a teaching ideal set down in the distant past?
