On 4 November 1874, the legislation to establish the University of Adelaide received royal assent, and the founders' dream of an open, accessible, enlightened University became a reality. The University owes its existence to the vision of the early colonists, especially the 1st Vice-Chancellor, Augustus Short.

He foresaw a great University, free from any test of religious affiliation, with an internationally-focussed staff, a diverse, enlightened student mix, and open to every capable person, regardless of wealth.

Short's vision continues to inspire us today.

Join us on Foundation Day, 6 November, for our own mini-festival, the Short Day Out. Grab some lunch, or bring a picnic, and enjoy the atmosphere and an eclectic mix of music, historical displays, photo opportunities, and even a few words from the 20th Vice-Chancellor, 140 years on.
