Heart disease is a leading cause of death and morbidity throughout the world. In Australia it causes one death every 12 minutes and is responsible for the greatest proportion of health care costs.

For centuries our understanding of the causes of heart disease and treatment strategies has been limited. However in the last half of a century we have witnessed major advances in the understanding of how heart disease develops, what causes heart attacks and how we can prevent heart disease. We also have a better understanding of how best to treat heart disease once we know it exists.

Yet, there is much work required before we can achieve a cure.

At our next Research Tuesdays event, leading cardiologist expert, Professor Stephen Nicholls, will discuss the historical path of treating heart disease, provide an overview of current practices and offer a glimpse into future treatment.

Stephen Nicholls is Professor of Cardiology at the University of Adelaide, and the Heart Foundation Heart Health Theme Leader at the inaugural South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). Steve undertook his medical degree at the University of Adelaide and completed his medical residency at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Following advanced training in cardiovascular medicine in Newcastle, he undertook doctoral studies at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Heart Research Institute focusing on the anti-inflammatory properties of HDL.
