Alfred Russel Wallace and the thin red evolutionary line
Speaker: Brian McGowran, Visiting Fellow at the University of Adelaide
Supper available
Ideas approaching the theory of evolution and the reality of immense geologic time were already in existence in the century before Darwin and Wallace independently produced the theory of evolution by natural selection. Evolution became simultaneously fact, theory and research program, taking almost another century to become generally accepted whilst Wallace held the line almost alone on natural selection. Perhaps the greatest in an age of great naturalists, Wallace was a pioneering synthesizer of zoogeography.
