The annual Lloyd Cox Memorial Lecture will be presented by Laureate Professor John Aitken, Pro Vice-Chancellor at The University of Newcastle.

Professor Aitken will discuss: The Janus faces of human fertility - How commercial interests, education and pollution are shaping the future of our species.

The Lloyd Cox Memorial Lecture is held by the Robinson Research Institute. The lecture series features international research and policy leaders tackling grand challenges in reproduction, pregnancy and child health.

Professor Aitken will discuss how increasing affluence in societies all over the world is leading to decreased fertility rates and a massive increase in the uptake of assisted reproductive technology (ART).

The inverse relationship between socioeconomic status and fertility is multifaceted and involves many elements. Normal reproductive function is no longer defined simply as capacity to achieve pregnancy, but must also accommodate the health of children born.

Additionally, there are major difficulties facing developing countries as a consequence of unbridled population growth. The Janus faces of human reproduction will pose a major challenge for both our species and our leaders; hopefully we shall be able to assemble the collective vision and sense-of-urgency needed to bring about change, before it is too late.
