The Victorian era (1837-1901) was an exciting time. Rapid and unregulated industrialisation brought with it tremendous social and political change and saw technological advancements in nearly every sphere. Book binding was no exception.

This fascinating exhibition explores the evolution of the book as it transitions away from the traditional methods of hand-binding towards the exquisitely gilt-blocked, machine-sewn and mass-produced publishers' cloth binding.

Curated by Lee Hayes, this stunning selection of books from both the Rare Books & Special Collections Library and the curator's own personal collection will be on display until 10th October 2015.

As part of the Executive Dean's Lecture Series, join us as we celebrate 50 years of transplantation in Australia.

Kidney Transplantation is one of the true wonders of 20th and 21st Century medicine.

The first ever kidney transplant in Australia was performed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital - with 2500 South Australian transplants since. Join Prof Coates Prof Coates as he takes us on an incredible journey which celebrates 50 years of kidney transplantation in Australia. You'll also hear human perspective from a patient who was transplanted first in 1973 then again in 2011, using new cutting edge science.

From the highly experimental procedure of the 1960s to the clinical success of today, the kidney transplant is now the most widely performed and successful organ transplant of the 20th and 21st century. Drug and technical advances have been extensive with the University of Adelaide participating in all of the major initiatives in kidney transplantation, as well as being the largest single centre providing transplantation for Indigenous Australians.

Prof Coates will highlight the role that South Australia has played in Australian and International Transplantation since the 1960s, how basic and clinical research has been translated into direct patient benefit, and how this is achieved in the University-Hospital setting.

Professor P. Toby H. Coates MBBS FRACP PhD is a leading Renal Transplant Nephrologist.
He is Director of Kidney and Islet Transplantation, Central Northern Adelaide Renal and Transplantation Service at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Professor of Medicine at the University of Adelaide, Associate Editor of Kidney International, Clinical consultant to National Transplantation Service of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and past Honorary Secretary Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand.
