Chris Herzfeld's Superheroes: Toxic Debris

Date/Time: Thursday, 28 July 2016 - Monday, 31 October 2016

Location: Level 3, The Hub

More information: Visit website

A sequel to Superheroes: Golden Vengeance, this photographic comic strip by Chris Herzfeld is on display on level 3 Hub until 31 October 2016 during Barr Smith Library hours.

Superheroes: Golden Vengeance and its sequel Superheroes: Toxic Debris are Parallax Graphic collaborations and form a collection focused on heroes.

The work analogises good vs evil and the archetype of heroes, and brings to the fore the daily bombardment of imagery and the interplay between sacred stories and crass consumerism in modern culture.

Those whose only knowledge of carbohydrates, or sugars, has been gleaned from popular media could be forgiven for thinking they're akin to dietary criminals, increasing our risk of weight-gain, heart disease and diabetes.

But their appearance in foods is just one aspect of their broader--and vital--role in our world. This is particularly so for complex carbohydrates, known as 'glycans'.

For example: defects in glycan enzymes underlie some human congenital diseases; steps in the biogenesis of microbial and plant glycans are targeted by antibiotics and herbicides, and; glycans from myriad sources are exploited in biofuels, textiles and composite materials.

Consequently, their study--'glycoscience'--is a thriving research area, and the University of Adelaide is right at its forefront. In this fascinating presentation we'll show how far glycoscience has come, and what the next exciting applications might be.
