With huge medical advances being made over the last 30 years, how is it that the rate of type 1 diabetes - like many other childhood diseases - has dramatically increased? Our modern environment holds the key.
Researchers at the University of Adelaide have been investigating how exposure to modifiable influences early in life, even in utero, can influence diabetes development.
They've also found ways of detecting the changes diabetes causes in children's blood vessels from a very young age, when they are still reversible. Significantly, this enables much earlier intervention.
Join us at our final Research Tuesdays presentation for 2016 to learn what's happening at the clinical and molecular level.
The presenter:
Professor Jenny Couper is Head of Paediatrics at the University of Adelaide. A paediatric endocrinologist, she also leads the Women's and Children's Hospital endocrinology and diabetes unit, the national ENDIA (Environmental Determinants of type 1 diabetes) consortium, and the cardiovascular investigation in Australia for the international Adolescent Diabetes Intervention Trial.
