Cover to Cover: Exposing the Bookbinder's Ancient Craft
Date/Time: Friday, 28 July 2017 - Friday, 29 September 2017
Location: Barr Smith Library, Rare Books & Special Collections, Level 1
Cost: Free: All Welcome

Bookbinding is a humble pursuit. Rarely does it receive the attention and glamour afforded to other ancient crafts. Unlike the silversmith or glassblower, whose talents are immediately obvious, the binder's craft of construction is largely concealed, making it difficult to celebrate that which we cannot see.
Yet a binding offers so much more than mere protection; it is a story in itself.
Delve into this fascinating, lesser-known craft in the Barr Smith Library, where exposed bindings, rare and old books, bookbinding equipment, tools and supplies from both Rare Books & Special Collections and the curator's personal collection will be on display.

Bend or Break: flexible institutions, teachers and students.
With significant changes over the last 10 years, universities have found it necessary to take a close look at the way they do business. Students have also been selective in their engagement with their institutions, with reduced attendance and greater use of technology and increasing work pressures. In the middle of this, the staff who are responsible for learning activities have had to adapt often becoming more flexible in their approaches to assessment, attendance, and teaching approaches. At this conference we ask "What are the challenges for flexible teaching and learning for the universities, for academics and for the learners?
