Email this event Printer Friendly Version

Date/Time: Wednesday, 6 October 2004, 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Location: Ira Raymond Room, Barr Smith Library, North Terrace Campus
Cost: FREE

The University of Adelaide Art and Heritage Collections and the Discipline of Philosophy present:

Professor Dominic Lopes (Philosophy, University of British Columbia), Professor Richard Woodfield (Art & Design, University of Nottingham-Trent) and Associate Professor John Armstrong (Philosophy University of Melbourne) in conversation with Dr Jennifer McMahon (Philosophy, University of Adelaide) on the topic of:

Are the arts elitist?

On 16 August 2004 an article by John Armstrong on the question of elitism in the arts was published in The Age. In it he argues that the arts require effort rather than elite resources. He wonders why the concept of elitism is celebrated in many fields apart from the arts.

Yet this Cultural Conversation will indeed be an elite experience, as four prominent thinkers in this field will discuss this topic with arts practitioners and the broader community.
