Inaugural Lecture
Mention "cirrhosis" and it typically conjurs an immediate association with excessive alcohol consumption. But although this connection is well established, it's not the end of the story.
The full spectrum of so-called "fatty liver diseases" that interfere with the liver's normal metabolism of fat and lead to cirrhosis, are also increasingly recognised as occurring in individuals who are overweight or obese, or have type 2 diabetes.
In his Inaugural Lecture, Professor Alastair Burt will describe this disease spectrum and the importance of accurate diagnosis, both for individuals and in epidemiological studies and clinical trials.
He will also consider factors that may influence individual susceptibility to advanced disease, and emerging novel treatments.
The presenter
Professor Alastair Burt was appointed Executive Dean of the University of Adelaide Faculty of Health Sciences in December 2014. He is a former Dean of Clinical Medicine and Chair of Pathology at Newcastle University, has been awarded a Fellowship by the Australasian Royal College, and is Editor-in-chief of MacSween's Pathology of the Liver.
