It's nothing but rhythm as Nick goes national

Wednesday, 5 April 2006

Acclaimed concert percussionist Nick Parnell will deliver his special brand of infectious rhythm when he embarks on a national tour this month.

The University of Adelaide-trained musician will perform a mix of world and classical pieces on the 10-date tour.

Concerts will be performed in Perth, Adelaide, the Flinders Ranges, Clare Valley, Wodonga, Shepparton, Melbourne, Grenfell, Canberra and Wagga Wagga.

Labelled "Australia's most exciting young percussionist," Nick is an award-winning musician who consistently breaks traditional boundaries.

In 2004 he was named the Most Outstanding Graduate of the Elder Conservatorium at the University of Adelaide after completing a Bachelor of Music, Honours and Masters degrees in Percussion Performance.

His music crosses a range of styles and he has mastered a number of instruments, including the marimba, vibraphone, drums, gongs and cymbals.

Nick has studied alongside some of the world's top musicians, such as Evelyn Glennie (Scotland), Gary Burton (USA), Bill Molenhof (USA/Germany), Neil Percy (UK) and Uffe Savery (Denmark).

Well known for fusing classical music with other styles, Nick is sure to enthral audiences with his works by Bach and Chopin on percussion.

One of the tour highlights will be Nick's concert at the Glenroy Estate in the Flinders Ranges on Saturday, April 22.

Performed in a woolshed as part of the Flinders Ranges festival, Tastes of the Outback, the concert will be preceded by lunch near a creek bed and wrapped up with afternoon tea, or smoko. Popular ABC Adelaide presenter, Peter Goers, will emcee the event.

The evening prior, Nick will perform at the State Opera Studio in Adelaide, where audiences will be treated to a mix of works from his last CD (including Brazilian Rhapsody) and forthcoming CD, to be released later this year.

The Melbourne concert, on April 28, will be a twilight event, with Nick performing popular classical pieces by Bach, Chopin and Gershwin and featuring new arrangements for the vibraphone and piano.

Concert dates are:- Perth: April 12; Adelaide, April 21; Flinders Ranges, April 22; Clare Valley, April 23; Wodonga, April 26; Shepparton, April 27; Melbourne, April 28; Grenfell, April 30; Canberra, May 3; Wagga Wagga, May 4.
