Wednesday, 7 July 2004 Are you interested in a career in the animation industry? The University of Adelaide is hosting a public seminar tomorrow night (Thursday) featuring leading animation industry figures giving advice about how to break into the field. It will also showcase examples of computer games, film/TV, claymation and online interactives. Six of Australia's leading animation companies will be represented at the seminar, including Rising Sun Pictures (represented by Didier Elzinga, a University of Adelaide graduate) which has worked on such Hollywood blockbusters as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Last Samurai; and Ratbag Games (founded by two University of Adelaide graduates), a major video games developer. The session is open to anyone interested in finding out more about a career in animation, and while aimed primarily at tertiary students looking to work in the industry after completing their qualifications, is also open to high school students and anyone else with an interest in animation. "Australian animation is very highly thought of around the world, as we saw with Harvie Krumpet winning the Best Animated Short Film at the Oscars earlier this year," Dr Bruton, Senior Lecturer in charge of the Digital Media Program at the University's School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, says. "This seminar session will be a chance for people to see the work and hear directly from some of Australia's best animators and find out how they got their start in the industry, what skills and attributes takes to be a good animator, and lots of other practical advice." Dr Bruton is also a key member of major computing group Adelaide ACM SIGGRAPH/ANZGRAPH, which in association with the Digital Labourer's Federation, have been responsible in successfully organising tomorrow's event. Places for the session are limited and bookings/RSVPs with Dr Dean Bruton are essential, ph (08) 8303 4038 - media are welcome to attend.
