The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) is conducting a Human Research Ethics Workshop on Thursday 27 July 2006.

When: Thursday 27 July 2006, 1.30pm for 2.00pm start - 5.00pm
Venue: The Radisson Playford Hotel, Ballroom 2 & 3, North Terrace
Cost: Attendance is free - afternoon tea provided

This half-day workshop is designed for both established researchers and newly commencing research postgraduates whose research work involves human participants.

It will provide:

  • an overview of ethics regulation as it applies to university researchers;

  • principal ethical issues that need to be considered in research design; and

  • the application process for ethics clearance of research projects.

It will include:

  • an update on the revision of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans; and

  • information about the new National Ethics Application Form.

The format for the day will be a mixture of brief presentations and case study discussion.

Presenters are: Associate Professor Annette Braunack-Mayer; Associate Professor Garrett Cullity; Associate Professor Ian Richards and Associate Professor Wendy Rogers. All four are members of the Research and Education Committee of the Ethics Centre of South Australia. Brief biographies of the presenters are below:

Associate Professor Annette Braunack-Mayer
Member of Royal Adelaide Hospital Treatment Ethics Committee and North West Area Health Service Board Research & Ethics Committee. Ethics teaching and research specialist within Discipline of Public Health, University of Adelaide. Co-author (with Wendy Rogers) of Practical Ethics for General Practice.

Associate Professor Wendy Rogers
Member of the Australian Health Ethics Committee and the Gene Technology Ethics Committee, and member of the AHEC Working Party currently revising the National Statement. Associate Professor of Medical Ethics and Health Law, Flinders University. Medical ethics teaching and research specialist in the School of Medicine. Co-author (with Annette Braunack-Mayer) of Practical Ethics for General Practice.

Associate Professor Garrett Cullity
Chair of University of Adelaide Human Research Ethics Committee. Head of Discipline of Philosophy, University of Adelaide. Teaching and research specialist in applied and theoretical ethics.

Associate Professor Ian Richards
Chair of University of South Australia Human Research Ethics Committee. Director of Postgraduate Journalism Program, University of South Australia. Author of Quagmires and Quandries: Exploring Journalism Ethics.

All four presenters are members of the Research and Education Committee of the Ethics Centre of South Australia.
