Hypothetical energy crisis for think tank forum

Friday, 21 July 2006

A global warming-fuelled energy crisis is the hypothetical scenario for a public event hosted by the University of Adelaide this Sunday, 23 July.

The Science Outside of the Square (SOS) event will see Adelaide Thinker-in-Residence, Professor Stephen Schneider, and a panel of scientific experts tasked with finding solutions to this politically charged potential disaster in the year 2010.

Up for debate will be some contentious options - a new natural gas-fuelled or nuclear power station - along
with some more offbeat solutions.

Professor Schneider, from Stanford University in California, is internationally recognised as a leading expert in atmospheric research and its implications for environment and society.

The event will be facilitated by Advertiser Editor Melvin Mansell. Other speakers are:

  • Prof Derek Abbott is Director of the Centre for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Adelaide. He has won numerous awards including in 2004 a Tall Poppy Award and the Premier's SA Great Award in Science and Technology for outstanding contributions to South Australia.
  • Catherine Gibson-Poole, University of Adelaide researcher, worked as a petroleum geologist in the oil industry

with GCA (UK) and Santos. She researches geological storage of carbon dioxide.
  • Professor Stephen Lincoln is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Adelaide. His interest in the future of humanity is covered in his book Challenged Earth: An Overview of Humanity's Stewardship of Earth.
  • Dr Martin Hand is a lecturer in Geology and Geophysics in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Adelaide. His research focuses on understanding the evolution of continental crust.

This event will be held on Sunday 23 July, 3-4.30pm, Scott Theatre, Kintore Avenue, University of Adelaide. It is supported by the Adelaide Thinkers in Residence program. It is free but booking is essential through Venue Tix on 8225 8888 or online at www.eventshop.net.au/science/science.php
