Student's world premiere performance

The world premiere of a piece composed by University of Adelaide PhD student Anne Cawrse will be the feature of the Elder School of Music Evening Concert held in Elder Hall at 8pm on Saturday (July 31).

Anne wrote The Nightingale and the Rose for her Honours folio; it was originally written as a ballet of the same title, the story of which was taken from a collection of short stories (fairy tales) by Oscar Wilde and which included his famous The Selfish Giant. Anne studies composition with Dr Graeme Koehne, Head of Composition at the Elder School of Music.

The second work in the program, Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 was written in 1811 for his friend, clarinettist Heinrich Baermann, and was so well received that he was commissioned by the King to write two more clarinet works. This concerto is alternately solemn, witty and brilliant and superbly displays the talents of the soloist, Rosanna Lovell.

Rosanna, a third year Bachelor of Music Performance student has been principal clarinet with the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra this year and has played a prominent role in the Elder Conservatorium Wind Ensemble (including acting as its Manager for two years). Rosanna plans to continue her musical career studying in France on completion of her Adelaide degrees.

The final work in the program, Dvorak's Symphony No. 6 in D was written during the composer's nationalist phase in 1880. This symphony is highly characteristic of Dvorak; it is rich in themes and freely modulated and is often described as one of Dvorak's finest. It is fitting to present the work this year, the centenary of the composer's death.

This concert features the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Keith Crellin, Conductor-in-Residence and Head of Strings at the Elder School of Music.
