Twenty of South Australia's "perfect score" students have the opportunity to receive a new $10,000 scholarship for study at the University of Adelaide.

Under the new University of Adelaide Merit Scholarships scheme any student who achieves a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) of 99.95 and accepts an offer to study at the University of Adelaide this year will receive $10,000 towards living and study costs.

The University of Adelaide has put an extra one million dollars towards new student scholarships starting in 2007 aimed at retaining the brightest students in South Australia and targeting every urban and rural secondary school in the State.

University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President Professor James McWha said: "The University of Adelaide would like to congratulate all students who've done well in Year 12 and particularly these students who have achieved outstanding results.

"The new scholarship scheme aims to both encourage and assist high achieving students, firstly, to take up university studies and, secondly, to do so within this State."

As well as the Merit Scholarship for those achieving TERs of 99.95, the University of Adelaide this year introduced the University of Adelaide Principals' Scholarships where students with outstanding academic merit and who have also made a significant contribution to their school and the wider community have been nominated by their principals for scholarships of $5000 towards study and living costs.
