Students encouraged to 'think big'

Tuesday, 18 September 2007

More than 200 students from Adelaide's western region will be encouraged to "think big" this Thursday 20 September when they rub shoulders with some of the State's most successful entrepreneurs.

The 11th annual Western Region Enterprise Day (WRED), held at Angle Park and coordinated by the University of Adelaide, aims to show students how to reach their potential, courtesy of the professionals.

The 2006 South Australian of the Year, Nick Palousis, will be the keynote speaker on the day.

"The day is about enterprise and entrepreneurship, sharing personal success stories and ways that others have achieved their potential - giving students options, ideas and alternatives to follow", says Joe Bennink, the University's Manager of Entrepreneurial Programs and Community Relations.

During the day, secondary students will give a PowerPoint presentation of some of the ideas they have gained, while primary students will take part in workshops run by Young Achievement Australia.

Primary school students will learn about areas of the business cycle and develop a product of their choice. As a follow up students will be asked to write a short essay about the ideas they have gained from WRED, for which prizes will be awarded.

Other guests on the day will include the Hon. Paul Caica, Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education, City of Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson, and a number of other representatives from Charles Sturt, West Torrens, and Port Adelaide Enfield council districts

The event will take place between 9am and 3pm at Parks Community Centre, Angle Park.

WRED is supported by the University of Adelaide, City of West Torrens, City of Port Adelaide Enfield, City of Charles Sturt, Inner West BEC, Martin Mediation, Young Achievement Australia, Western Futures, Tall Poppy Campaign and Educational Consultants.
