Thursday, 10 May 2001 A group of enterprising South Australians is taking advantage of a new course being run at Adelaide University, which aims to give the public an insight into investing on the Australian stock exchange. Australian Sharemarket Investment: Finding Long-Term Value is a one-day course being run on Saturday, May 12, at Adelaide University's Centre for Professional & Continuing Education. A first for South Australia, the course is aimed at novices and experienced investors alike, helping potential investors to find great companies that are selling at low prices. The presenter is Dr John Price from Sydney, who has published extensively on investments, finance and mathematics. He has a syndicated investment column called "Price on Value" dedicated to helping people find long-term value in stocks. Dr Price has been a professor in Australia and the United States and has had visiting positions in Cambodia, Canada, England, Italy and Switzerland. The 35 people enrolled in the course will learn different investing styles, criteria for undervalued companies, how to put together a portfolio, and how to calculate expected profit. They will also learn the principles for a long-term approach based on the ideas of Warren Buffett, who turned $140,000 into $42 billion. "Participants in the course are provided with a systematic procedure for finding quality companies that yield long-term profits for investors," Dr Price says. "It's all about identifying which companies can provide long-term value for your investment. "We've had an overwhelming response to this first course, so there's no doubt that I'll be returning to Adelaide on a regular basis to give others the chance to learn about these methods," he says. |
