Adelaide's outstanding and much-loved series of concerts, ELDERHALL lunchtimes, will commence its 2008 season on Friday 28 March at the University of Adelaide.

"The series is not only a wonderful showcase for students and staff from the University's Elder Conservatorium of Music, but audiences will also be treated to local, national and international musicians of the highest calibre," says Elder Hall's new Concert Manager, Claire Oremland.

"Audiences will be delighted by the superb mix of music, ranging from symphony to song, baroque to jazz, and everything in between."

A special highlight of the first half of the season is the Cellos at Lunch mini concert series. Part of the Adelaide International Cello Festival, Cellos at Lunch will star cellists from around the globe every weekday between 11-18 April.

Other highlights include the internationally acclaimed Australian String Quartet performing Ravel's sumptuous string quartet (4 April), and the gifted young students that make up the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra will thrill with a performance of the mighty Symphony No. 1 by Brahms (23 May).

To open the season on 28 March, one of Adelaide's 'favourite daughters', Margaret Blades, will return. Recently appointed as Co-Concertmaster of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Margaret will be performing on a 1710 Italian violin made by Gioffredo Cappa, on loan to her through the kind support of Janet Holmes à Court. Margaret will join the Director of the Elder Conservatorium of Music and pianist, David Lockett, to perform works by Ravel and Strauss.

Ms Oremland says that for many people in Adelaide, "these lunchtime concerts are like an oasis".

"They can transport you from the hustle and bustle of everyday living to the elegance and rich resonance of historic Elder Hall. For an hour, music feeds the soul, energising and inspiring, before the eventual return to work or home."
