National award for radio producer

Radio Adelaide producer Laine Langridge has won a major national award for her radio series examining Australia's ageing population.

She won the OPSO National Award for Radio at an awards ceremony in Brisbane last night for her 20-part series Keep On Keeping On - working and connecting regardless of age. OPSO stands for "Older People Speak Out", and their awards are regarded as the most important in the country for highlighting positive and realistic portrayal of older people in the media.

Keep On Keeping On was broadcast on Radio Adelaide in July, and is coming soon to community radio around Australia. It investigates two key social issues facing the nation's ageing population: the challenges of remaining in the workforce and of maintaining links between generations.

"We are delighted for Laine, because she invested a lot of time and effort to make Keep On Keeping On the success that it was," Radio Adelaide manager Deb Welch says.

"Laine was the program manager here at Radio Adelaide up until 1999, when she retired - but she came back in November 2003, aged 66, to produce this series, in that way paralleling the experience of the people featured in the program.

"Besides interviewing more than 40 people in every State about their experiences in growing older, she herself had to learn how to use a lot of new digital technology in order to make the series, and she did an outstanding job on all fronts.

"The series is about how older people in Australia don't just fade away when they retire but can still have an impact on society, and Laine is a great example of that."
