Global warming update opens combustion conference

An update of the latest developments in Australia's battle with global warming headlines an important conference beginning today (Thursday) at Adelaide University.

Dr Colin Grant, Deputy CEO of the Australian Greenhouse Office, will deliver the keynote address of the 2002 Australian Symposium on Combustion, a two-day think-tank featuring Australian and overseas combustion experts discussing the latest ideas and research in the field of combustion.

Dr Grant will discuss the projected impact on Australia of global warming, as well as the progress achieved to date from actions taken to reduce emissions nationally

Adelaide University is the perfect choice as host for the symposium, as it is a national leader in combustion research with numerous achievements, most notably its work for the 2000 Olympic Flame.

Through the University's Turbulence Energy and Combustion Group, it has also received international recognition for developing the Gyro- Therm burner, a combustion device which reduces fuel costs and increases product quality while at the same time significantly reducing pollution emissions.

The University, through its involvement in the Cooperative Research Centre for Clean Power from Lignite, is a key player in the development of cost-effective technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power stations in South Australia and Victoria. The Centre is sponsoring the conference and the CEO, Dr David Brockway, will officially open the event.

NOTE: Media are welcome to attend Dr Grant's lecture, which is being held from 9.20am to 10.20am today (Thursday) in the Rennie Lecture Theatre, Johnson Building at Adelaide University. Dr Grant arrived in Adelaide yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon.
