Starting on Friday 31 July, the second concert season of Lunchtimes at ELDERHALL for 2009 offers Adelaide's music lovers a cultural diversion during tough economic times.

"Culture and entertainment are more important than ever for people going through economic hardship," says Elder Hall manager Claire Oremland.

"This is one of the reasons why the Lunchtimes at ELDERHALL series is perfect for an arts-loving city like Adelaide - the concerts feature some of the biggest names in music in Australia and around the globe, but they are also very affordable. There really is no other music series like it in Adelaide," she says.

The concert series features staff and students from the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium of Music, along with national and international guest musicians.

To open the season (31 July), renowned youth choir Young Adelaide Voices directed by Christie Anderson will perform the exquisite and moving Baroque masterpiece Stabat Mater by Pergolesi.

The following Friday (7 August) features a special 50th anniversary performance of Miles Davis's Kind of Blue, one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. This concert sees the return of New York jazz giant Ray Vega on trumpet, joined by staff from the Elder Conservatorium's Jazz School.

In a departure from her usual role of 1st violin with the Australian String Quartet, Sophie Rowell will direct the Adelaide Chamber Players in two of the most loved string serenades, by Elgar and Tchaikovsky (28 August).

Other highlights of the season include the internationally acclaimed Australian String Quartet (11 September), the young and talented Benaud Piano Trio (2 October), much loved artist and newly appointed concertmaster of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Natsuko Yoshimoto (23 October), and the Adelaide Chamber Singers (30 October).

"The high quality and diversity of these concerts ensures that Lunchtimes at ELDERHALL continues to hold a unique place in Adelaide's musical life," Ms Oremland says.
