Elder School of Music opens its doors

SOUTH Australia's foremost musical education centre, the Elder School of Music at the University of Adelaide, opens its doors to the public tomorrow (Friday, September 13) - the first time the University has held an Open Day specifically for Music.

The Open Day will showcase all the Elder School of Music has to offer, from learning about Elvis to hearing three new School choirs in full voice.

The day begins at 10.30am with a welcoming address by Elder Professor of Music, and Dean of the Elder School of Music, Professor Charles Bodman Rae in Bonython Hall.

This is followed by instrumental/vocal group meetings, which will provide all the necessary information about studying the instrument of your choice, such as brass, jazz, percussion, piano, strings, voice and woodwind.

In the afternoon, people have the chance to see the Elder School of Music in action, with jazz performances, chamber music, music technology demonstrations and a lecture about the musical journey from Elvis to U2.

Other highlights during the day include the opportunity to see and hear two full-scale rehearsals: the School's Chamber Orchestra at 11.30am in Elder Hall; as well as three new School choirs - the Elder Conservatorium Chamber Choir, the Elder Conservatorium Chorale, and the Elder Conservatorium Women's Choir - at 2.30pm in Elder Hall, in a preview of a concert they are giving the following night.

The Open Day presents the perfect opportunity to ask the State's best musical and instrumental educators about the course of study that is right for you, as well as meeting current students, and should not be missed by any aspiring musicians.
