Open Day is just as important for parents as it is for the teenagers making their choice, said Manager of the University of Adelaide's Prospective Students' Office, Karen Pichlmann.

She urged parents to make the most of information gathering alongside their children at the University's Open Day on Sunday 15 August.

Ms Pichlmann said parents played a key role in helping their children to make decisions about tertiary study. "Choosing a university is not just about choosing the right course - for many students and their parents it's got to be the right course at the right place," she said.

"Open Day will give parents and their children a great feel for the campus. It gives them the chance to talk to staff and current students, to make sure they're comfortable and happy with the environment they're coming to, and understand where the University of Adelaide can take them in their career."

For the first time this year, a special information talk for parents and guardians will be held during Open Day to help them to better understand the applications process, what the University of Adelaide offers, and how to support their child's transition to university.

"It will give parents the chance to ask the questions they want to ask and to hear from parents who already have children at the University," Ms Pichlmann said.

The University of Adelaide Open Day is the major day of the year when prospective students, their families and friends visit the University to learn more about study and career opportunities and university life.

It's also a community day when members of the general public visit the University to hear about the University's research, tour the campus and facilities or simply enjoy entertainment, performances and displays.

There's something for everyone at the University of Adelaide's Open Day and it's all free:

  • The inaugural Three Minute Thesis competition - PhD students will get just three minutes to explain their three-year research in a fun event before a panel of judges, 2.30pm, Scott Theatre
  • Tours of the University's historic and state-of-the-art buildings and facilities including Australia's first 6 Star Green Star environmentally sustainable education building, Innova21
  • Research Forum: four of the University's leading researchers will discuss 'Our research shaping South Australia's future', 1pm, Lecture Theatre G03, Napier Building
  • Faculty displays, activities and talks demonstrating the range of educational and research opportunities.
