Business leader speaks at Hong Kong ceremony

Sunday, 13 March 2005

Leading Hong Kong businessman Mr HL Kam will speak at the graduation ceremony for the University of Adelaide today (Sunday, March 13).

Mr Kam is Deputy Managing Director of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited, and holds numerous other senior executive roles with the Cheung Kong Group, the massive Hong Kong-based conglomerate which employs more than 180,000 people worldwide.

The University of Adelaide is the third-oldest university in Australia (established in 1874), carries a five-star rating for prestige, and held its first official Hong Kong graduation ceremony last year.

This year's ceremony will again be held at the Grand Hyatt, Hong Kong.

In 1963 Adelaide became the first Australian university to introduce an Master of Business Administration degree.

Currently in Hong Kong the University of Adelaide offers MBA programs through the Hopkins Training & Education Group, which has offices at Hong Kong and Kowloon.

University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President Professor James McWha says 42 students will graduate at today's ceremony and will also have the unique opportunity to hear Mr Kam give his graduation address.

"We are delighted and honoured that someone of such standing as Mr Kam will be attending our ceremony, and imparting just some of the knowledge and wisdom he has acquired in his career," Professor McWha says.

"Mr Kam has worked closely with many Australian universities, including the University of Adelaide, in his role as President and CEO of CK Life Sciences, a group which is conducting collaborative clinical trials for cancer and AIDS.

"He also played a significant role in establishing the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Scholarship Program, which promotes student exchange between Australia and Asia."
