Duncan documentary wins media award

Thursday, 31 October 2002

The South Australia Institute of Justice Studies has awarded a special commendation to Radio Adelaide in its 2002 Awards for Media Excellence.

Radio Adelaide's program team The Aqueerium was singled out for a feature documentary "The Killing of Dr George", produced in May 2002 to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of University of Adelaide law lecturer Gr George Duncan.

Dr Duncan was killed in a gay hate crime that became the trigger for homosexual law reform in this state.

SA Attorney General Michael Atkinson made the presentation on Tuesday night at an awards dinner at the Festival Theatre.

The documentary was praised for its historical significance and in particular for the inclusion of comment from people who had been gay activists at the time of Dr Duncan's death.

The program not only told the full story, but reviewed the impact of the event on the Adelaide community, particularly on gay and lesbian people. Younger speakers spoke of what they knew and believed about the event and gay hate crimes today.

The program concluded with on site recordings from the unveiling of a memorial plaque on the banks of the River Torrens on May 10.

A replay of "The Killing of Dr George" can be heard at 11am on Public Domain, Sunday, December 8, on Radio Adelaide 101.5FM, and worldwide in Real Audio at www.radio.adelaide.edu.au

The Aqueerium broadcasts every Saturday morning on Radio Adelaide at 11am.
