The University of Adelaide today offered a package of Australia's most attractive scholarships to leading students from South Australia and interstate.

The scholarships are part of a $15 million scholarships scheme being offered in 1999 by the University of Adelaide.

The recommended scholarship winners notified today will each receive full fee remission plus a generous $10,000 a year living allowance for the duration of their undergraduate degree.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide, Professor Mary O'Kane, said the scholarship winners included many of the South Australian students who were notified today that they had achieved perfect or near-perfect scores in the SACE. Several excellent interstate students have also been offered scholarships.

Scholarships announced today include three "Premier's Scholarships", sponsored by the State Government to support students studying areas critical to South Australia's future, one Andrew Thomas Scholarship for the top applicant to Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering, eight Adelaide Undergraduate Scholarships, and 17 International Scholarships.

Professor O'Kane said the scholarships would keep many of South Australia's brightest young minds in the State, as well as attracting excellent students from interstate and overseas.

"I would like to congratulate the scholarship winners as well as the many fine applicants who will be notified of awards over the weeks ahead," she said.

"The University of Adelaide will be offering a range of scholarships this year and we aim to build on this scheme in subsequent years as part of our determination to make Adelaide one of the most attractive education destinations in the region and, indeed, the world."
