Groundbreaking physicist dies in Adelaide

Wednesday, 17 February 1999

World-renowned physicist Professor Herbert S. Green has died in Adelaide after a long illness. He was aged 78.

In 1951 Professor Green - known to many as 'Bert Green' - became the first professor of theoretical physics in Australia, having been appointed to the Chair of Mathematical Physics at the University of Adelaide.

He was the author of 13 books, ranging from the theory of liquids to quantum computing - the last completed just before he died.

His work on the theory of molecular liquid physics was considered groundbreaking by physicists throughout the world. He was also known for his views on the effects of petrochemicals on the environment.

Professor Green authored more than 150 scientific papers, and many of his students now occupy professorial chairs throughout the world. He was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 1954.

Although he retired from the University of Adelaide in 1985, he continued to pursue his work actively both in Adelaide and with colleagues abroad. On his retirement he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor with the University.

Professor Green died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon following a long battle with lymphoma. He is survived by his wife and two children.

There will be a private funeral for the family and close friends on Friday - plans for a memorial service are to be announced.

The family has requested that no flowers be sent. Instead, they have asked for donations to be made in his memory to the H. S. Green Prize for Honours in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics at the University of Adelaide.Plans for a memorial service are to be announced.
