Student ingenuity on show in 2014

Wednesday, 9 July 2014

The University of Adelaide's mechanical engineering showcase MechExpo will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with the addition of the University's other engineering and technology-related degrees in a free public exhibition at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Announcing Ingenuity 2014: an exhibition of engineering, computer and mathematical sciences − to take place in October − the University says it will become a highlight for engineering and technology education in South Australia.

"Ingenuity 2014 will be a great opportunity for high school students from across the state to actually see how they might be involved in helping solve many of the complex challenges facing our society," says Professor John Beynon, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

"School students will be able to interact with university students and their projects, and experience the sorts of things they would be doing if they study engineering and technology-related degrees at the University of Adelaide.

"Our student projects show the best of our students' creative abilities in problem-solving concerned with contemporary issues and challenges of the future."

Over the past 20 years, MechExpo has grown from its original home on the top floor of the University's Engineering South building, to a major exhibition at the Adelaide Showgrounds and now to the Adelaide Convention Centre as part of Ingenuity 2014.

"Over this time thousands of school students, industry representatives and friends and family have had a chance to marvel at the ingenuity shown by our mechanical engineering students," says Professor Beynon. "From this year, we'll be broadening that opportunity to all our teaching disciplines."

This year MechExpo will celebrate its anniversary in the evening of Wednesday 29 October followed by a public preview, 6-9pm.

On Thursday 30 October, 10am-4pm, Ingenuity 2014 will bring together chemical, civil, environmental and mining, electrical and electronic, mechanical and petroleum engineering, along with mathematical and computer sciences, all under the one banner.

Innovative projects will showcase the diverse applications of engineering and technology-related disciplines, representing the culmination of the students' years of study and hard work.
