Celebrating the value of science

University of Adelaide staff and students will be celebrating the value of science with the community in a range of public events during National Science Week (16-24 August).

From having the chance to evaluate some of the latest foods in development, through to a film festival about the marine world or seeing how kids navigate neuroscience with a series of interactive activities, there will be plenty of opportunities for the whole community to see how science underpins their world.

University of Adelaide events and activities in National Science Week include:

Particle Fever. Join Dr Paul Jackson, from the University's School of Chemistry and Physics, for a film and Q&A session on the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet. Tuesday 19 August, 5.30-7.30pm, The Braggs Lecture Theatre. Please book.

The Hunt for Dark Matter. Professor Juan Collar from the University of Chicago will talk about the worldwide hunt for dark matter. Wednesday 20 August, 6.30-7.30pm, Lecture Theatre 102, Napier Building.

Served with a sprinkling of science: what would you put on your plate? Participants will hear about new food products in development and vote on the ones they would put on their plate. Thursday 21 August, 6.30-9.00am, Lecture Theatre G04, Napier Building. Registration beforehand essential.

Understanding Climate Science. Professor Barry Brook, Professor of Climate Change with the University's Environment Institute, will discuss the latest on climate change and how concerned people should be. Thursday 21 August, 6.00pm, Ancient World, 116 Hindley Street. Bookings required.

Beneath the Waves Film Festival. Bringing together marine films from around the world for open discussion. Friday 22 August, 6.00pm (screening starts at 6.30pm), The Braggs Lecture Theatre. Bookings essential.

Science Sculpting Contest. Organised by the Adelaide University Sciences Association, participants will combine their science knowledge with "play dough skills" to make a model within the theme Food for our future: science to feed the world. Friday 22 August, 4.00-5.30pm, Horace Lamb Lecture Theatre.

3 Minute Thesis Faculty of Sciences final. Science PhD students will present their theses in just three minutes to see who will go ahead to the University-wide competition finals in September. Friday 22 August, 6.00-7.30pm, Horace Lamb Lecture Theatre. Please book.

Kids Navigate Neuroscience. For children aged 7-12: Meet neuroscientists and take part in fun activities designed to show how the brain and nervous system work. Saturday 23 August, 10.00am-1.00pm, University of Adelaide Medical School.
