International students recognised by Governor

Six University of Adelaide students have been recognised in the 2014 Governor's International Student Awards.

University of Adelaide students won three of the major categories and were highly commended in three categories.

PhD Environmental Law student Manuel Solis won the Academic Excellence Postgraduate category. Manuel, from the Philippines, is also a Teaching Fellow at the Adelaide Law School and has published eight research papers in the energy and environmental law field in highly reputable Australian and International law books and journals.

"I am hopeful that I am able to contribute, albeit in a modest way, towards building a conscientious mass of future lawyers, policy analysts, and journalists, who can make a difference not only to, but beyond, themselves," Manuel says.

Bachelor of Science (BioMed) second-year student Pawanrat Tangseefa was winner in the Academic Excellence Undergraduate category. Pawanrat, from Thailand, holds an International Student Scholarship from the University of Adelaide and was awarded an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from the Faculty of Sciences for second year. Pawanrat has also been actively involved in student volunteering.

"I was very lucky that I got a scholarship to study at the University of Adelaide. I meet lots of inspiring people in many different fields of research and learn many interesting things. I meet lots of friends who are sharing the same interest and have learnt to adapt myself to the new environment and to other people who are from different culture backgrounds," says Pawanrat.

Master of Music Performance student Alessandra Woods won the Excellence in the Arts category. Alessandra, from the US, is a professional flautist, currently performing with the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and an active member of the Flute3 trio Adelaide. She has also won an orchestral traineeship with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

"For me, Adelaide is the cultural experience in Australia. There is always music to listen to, be inspired by, and I wanted to be a part of it. Adelaide has awarded me opportunities here I would not have received anywhere else," says Alessandra.

Nigerian student Abiodun Okunola, studying a Masters in Global Food and Agribusiness was highly commended in the Academic Excellence Postgraduate category; Vietnamese Commerce student Khanh Linh Tran was highly commended in the Academic Excellence Undergraduate category; and James Wong, from Malaysia who is studying a double degree in International Studies and Economics was highly commended in the Excellence in Sport category.

The Governor's International Student Awards are endorsed by His Excellency the Governor of South Australia and are a StudyAdelaide initiative.

The awards are presented for outstanding achievement by international students in: academic excellence, the arts, sporting achievement and community engagement.
