Memorial trust to continue the legacy of Ian Cocks

Monday, 28 June 1999

A permanent trust fund has been established in memory of Ian Cocks, the late South Australian businessman and community leader, to support students studying at the University of Adelaide in areas that were close to Mr Cocks' heart.

The trust is aimed at increasing South Australia's knowledge base particularly in the areas of wine industry technology, marketing and business, engineering for manufacturing industries, and tourism.

Mr Cocks, who died tragically during the Classic Adelaide Rally in 1997, was on the boards of many companies, including Adelaide Brighton Cement Lt and Petaluma Ltd. He was instrumental in bringing the Formula One Grand Prix to Adelaide in 1985.

The Executive Chairman of Petaluma, Mr Brian Croser, announced today his company had contributed $100,000 to the trust, which aims to build a capital fund of $1 million.

"Ian Cocks was an enthusiast for achievement," Mr Croser said.

"To whatever he turned his mind, Ian brought his own energy, enthusiasm and high standards of achievement. I hope many people will contribute to the trust, in respect for Ian and in the hope of continuing his legacy in a new generation."

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide, Professor Mary O'Kane, said Mr Cocks' faith in this State would live on through the trust.

"The trust will support areas which are crucial to our future," she said. "I'm very pleased that the University can help perpetuate Ian's enthusiastic and effective role in building up South Australia's economy and quality of life."

The board of the trust includes Professor O'Kane, Mr Croser, the Managing Director of Gerard Industries, Mr Rob Gerard, a Senior Partner of BDO Nelson Parkhill, Mr Ian Martens, and Ian Cocks' widow Sue.

All donations to the Ian Cocks Memorial Trust of $2 or more are fully income tax deductible and can be sent to: The Ian Cocks Memorial Trust, c/- The University of Adelaide, South Australia 5005.
