University of Adelaide graduate, Giles Dunseath-Hamilton, has been named among the 2016 John Monash Scholars.

Mr Dunseath-Hamilton was one of seventeen people selected to win this prestigious scholarship, which is awarded annually to outstanding Australians with leadership potential.

Named in honour of the Australian military and civic leader General Sir John Monash, the scholarship recognises the winners’ academic excellence and their potential contribution to the future of Australia.

The John Monash Scholarship provides recipients with $60,000 a year to fund overseas study at one of the world’s leading universities.

In 2012, Mr Dunseath-Hamilton graduated with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours and a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Adelaide.

For the past three years, Mr Dunseath-Hamilton has worked on major energy and infrastructure projects in Australia, China, Malaysia and Brunei.

Mr Dunseath-Hamilton plans to use his scholarship to undertake postgraduate studies in energy economics and environmental policy at the University College London or Oxford University.

“The course covers a range of economic assessment techniques designed to aid in the creation and evaluation of public policy in the field of energy production,” Mr Dunseath-Hamilton says.

“This course is particularly relevant to the current climate debate and I hope to return to Australia and contribute to an intelligent and informed policy discussion on the issue and then ensure that wise words are followed with measurable deeds. Commitment without action is no one’s best friend,” he says.

In addition to his outstanding academic achievements, Mr Dunseath-Hamilton has served as a Captain in the Australian Army Reserve, and is an accomplished musician and sportsman.

“I’ve had some brilliant mentors in military, civilian and academic circles. The influence of these mentors and their commitment to lead by example, service and dedication to those around them, has significantly influenced my development,” Mr Dunseath-Hamilton says.
