Medical research events highlight cancer, nutrition

Tuesday, 8 June 2004

A free public lecture and a public expo in Adelaide this week will help educate the public about key areas of medical research, such as cancer and nutrition.

The events are being held as part of the annual Medical Research Week (June 5-12).

Medical Research Week is designed to give the public a better understanding of what occurs in research institutions such as the University of Adelaide. It is hosted by the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), the country's peak professional body representing Australian health and medical research.

Events involving the University of Adelaide include:

Public Research Expo
9am-5pm Wednesday, June 9
Rundle Mall, Gawler Place canopy

This free event features interactive displays, giveaways and prizes by the University of Adelaide, Hanson Institute, the Queen Elizabeth and Women's and Children's hospitals, IMVS, CSIRO and other institutions. It's a great chance to meet a scientist and find out what they really do.

The University of Adelaide booth will showcase research from the Florey Adelaide Male Ageing Study.

Free Public Lecture
"Diet, Genes and TV"
6pm-8pm Thursday, June 10
Florey Lecture Theatre, University of Adelaide Medical School, Frome Rd

Three well-known health and nutrition experts - Dr Manny Noakes, Dr Michael Fenech and Dr Kaye Mehta - will examine the reality behind diets, health, nutrition and the media. They will help explain what you eat and what it does to your body.

Other events involving ASMR this week include the Tertiary Schools Careers Expo at Wayville Showgrounds on Tuesday, June 8.
