The University of Adelaide's Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology [1], Professor Jeffrey Robinson [2], has been awarded a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to maternal and fetal health.

Professor Robinson is a British citizen who has headed Australia's largest - and arguably most prestigious - obstetrics and gynaecology department at the University of Adelaide for the past decade.

Under Professor Robinson's direction, the University of Adelaide has built an international reputation for the quality of its research in fetal-maternal health and reproductive medicine and biology.

Responding to the honour, Professor Robinson paid tribute to his team, saying the award reflected the professionalism and outstanding research skills of the whole discipline.

"I'm in a privileged position being able to lead such a team of people and I feel this honour should be shared by all my colleagues," he said.

Professor Robinson is one of three British citizens living overseas who were awarded CBE medals in the 2006 Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The internationally renowned obstetrician has enjoyed a distinguished reputation in the reproductive medicine field for more than 35 years.

He was born in Northern Ireland in 1941 and graduated with First Class Honours from the Queen's University [3], Belfast, in 1967, winning the Gold Medal when he passed his Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists [4] in London.

Professor Robinson built an outstanding research career at the University of Oxford [5] before accepting the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Newcastle [6], NSW, in 1980.

In 1986 he was appointed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Adelaide.

Under Professor Robinson's leadership, the University of Adelaide has been awarded the largest number of competitive research grants over the past 10 years for any Australian university obstetrics and gynaecology department.

"Professor Robinson has had 233 high quality, peer-reviewed papers published in his career, the majority in highly respected scientific journals. He is frequently sought as a national and international plenary speaker, particularly in the area of fetal origins of adult diseases," according to his colleague, Professor Alastair MacLennan [7].

"His major contribution has been to show that growth restriction of the fetus during pregnancy leads to increased mortality and morbidity around birth, and also to a risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life.

"He is an outstanding clinician, providing care to women with high-risk pregnancies. He is also a superb teacher, with many of his students appointed to professional chairs or senior clinical or research positions," Professor MacLennan said.
