Adelaide researchers elected to Academy of Science

Two University of Adelaide researchers have joined the ranks of Australia's leading scientists who have been honoured by election to the Australian Academy of Science.

Being elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science [1] recognises a career that has significantly advanced, and continues to advance, the world's scientific knowledge.

Scientific contributions of the 17 new Fellows cover a wide range of research specialities and applications for industry, science and the community. The new Fellows from the University of Adelaide are highly regarded for their work in the fields of geology and mathematics.

They are:

Professor Mathai Varghese [2] FAA FAustMS
Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow, School of Mathematical Sciences [3], and Director, Institute for Geometry and its Applications [4]
distinguished for his work in geometric analysis involving the topology of manifolds, including the Mathai-Quillen formalism in topological field theory.

Dr George Ellis Williams [5] FAA FGSAm FGSAust
Visiting Research Fellow, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences [6] (Geology & Geophysics [7])
distinguished for his work in the Earth and planetary sciences in the fields of sedimentology, palaeoclimatology, paleomagnetism, meteoritics and Earth-Moon dynamics.

Professor Mathai Varghese (Director, Institute for Geometry and its Applications, School of Mathematical Sciences) is a new Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
