Postgraduate research is under the spotlight this week, as Adelaide hosts the 6th Quality in Postgraduate Research Conference (April 22-23).

This year's program has an emphasis on graduate qualities and ensuring that graduates have the range of skills required by employers.

Conference papers and forums will also cover issues such as finding a balance between academic excellence and the real-world needs of students, the role of women in postgraduate study, educating the leaders of the future, and how a student copes with not completing a PhD.

Conference convener Professor Neville Marsh of the University of Adelaide says that the conference is a great opportunity for academic staff, students and policy makers to discuss research, best practice and policies relating to postgraduate education.

"The changes to the funding of research education challenge us to re-imagine what we do and how we do it," says Professor Marsh, who is interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies at Adelaide.

This year, the biennial event has attracted speakers and delegates from South Australia's three universities, from across Australia, and from countries such as the UK, Thailand, South Africa, China, Spain and Sweden.

The conference will be held at the Stamford Grand Hotel at Glenelg.
