Spirit of Christmas 2020 - The Gifting Tree

It's only Christmas when we share it! A University tradition leading up to Christmas is to collect books and educational toys for the Smith Family under the Gifting Tree in the foyer of the Mitchell Building.

We invite all members of the University community and their families to join our Spirit of Christmas tradition by placing books, puzzles or other educational toys under the Gifting Tree. Your contributions will support the Smith Family’s Toy and Book Appeal, which aims to unlock opportunities for disadvantaged Australian children through education and learning. Please leave your gifts unwrapped, or wrapped in clear cellophane, and attach a gift tag indicating the age group and suitability for either a boy or girl.

The Gifting Tree artwork was is by Adelaide-based artist Hans Kreiner, commissioned by the University of Adelaide in 2009 to create a focus for charity collections during the festive season. The Gifting Tree invites the viewer to feel life and hope engendered by its perky branches and the birds perched upon them. In 2015 Hans added three new animals to the tree, refreshing its identity. The Smith Family is a national charity helping young Australians in need to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. The Smith Family’s commitment to children, and the collection and distribution of books and toys, remains unwavering.
