International recognition for dental scientist

Dr. Gary Slade, Professor of Oral Epidemiology at the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health, University of Adelaide, Australia, is the 2008 recipient of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award, has been presented at the 86th General Session & Exhibition in Toronto, ON, Canada, July 2, 2008. Mary Ann McKiernan, granddaughter of H. Trendley Dean, has been in attendance for the presentation of the award.

This award, one of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, is supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Company in memory of H. Trendley Dean, the 21st President of the IADR and first dental officer of the National Institutes of Health. The award consists of a cash prize and plaque and is given for distinguished accomplishments in research and development in the fields of behavioral science, epidemiology, and public health. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.

Dr. Slade received a B.D.Sc. from the University of Melbourne, Australia, a D.D.P.H. from the University of Toronto, ON, Canada, and a Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He has participated in various epidemiologic achievements, including population oral health surveillance of tooth loss, periodontal diseases, and dental caries. Dr. Slade has also carried out epidemiological research in orofacial pain, and the impact of oral conditions and dental care on quality of life. Relationships between oral conditions and systemic health, and effectiveness of fluoridation and other health measures for caries prevention are also reflected in approximately 115 publications, original papers, books, and book chapters.
