Application and Admission
Where to apply
School leavers apply for undergraduate degrees through the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC).
When to apply
Applications can be made between July and late September each year. After the closing date a late application can still be made, but a late fee will be charged. Some programs also offer mid-year entry, but please check the details for individual programs.
How to apply
Applications are made online using SATAC UniWeb. This web-based system allows applicants to start an application and save at various points during the process, returning to it when they want to add or change details. Applicants can record up to six preferences; these can be changed at various points in the application process.
How should preferences be ordered?
List preferences beginning with most preferred program and ending with least preferred program. Applicants will be offered the highest-scored (i.e. TER) preference for which they are eligible. Not all students qualify for their first preference, so that's why it's important to list other preferences and increase your child's options for university entry. Prospective students who require help with alternative pathways are encouraged to contact the University for assistance.
How many places are available?
All programs have quotas, limiting the number of students who can be enrolled. Some have very large quotas. For example, the Bachelor of Arts program takes in around 500 first year students, and the Bachelor of Science program admits around 300. Other programs have much smaller quotas, some taking fewer than 20 students.
What is a TER?
The TER or Tertiary Entrance Rank is used to select students for degrees.
Year 12 students have a University Aggregate calculated from their year 12 results. Their marks out of 20 for their best four subjects, and half their marks out of twenty for their fifth subject, are added together to give a score out of ninety.
The University Aggregates for all students in the state are then put in rank order, resulting in there being assigned a TER between 1 and 99.95.
Bonus points
The University of Adelaide's Fairway Scheme offers up to six bonus points for students who have attended an under-represented school for their Year 12. 'Under-represented' schools are those that send smaller numbers of their students to South Australian universities than might be expected from the size of the school population.
The University of Adelaide also offers two bonus points for students who have passed Specialist Mathematics (formerly Mathematics II), and two bonus points for students who have passed a language other than English. The bonus points are added to the University Aggregate.
