No Specialist Mathematics?

In 2008, three new and exciting engineering programs were launched. Each of these programs has slightly more relaxed prerequisites and do not require Specialist Mathematics.

Option 1Option 2

Consider Architectural Engineering, Sports Engineering or Sustainable Energy Engineering.

Each program has the prerequisite of SACE Stage 2 Mathematical Studies plus one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Specialist Mathematics.

If successful in gaining a place in the program, complete the courses deemed equivalent to Specialist Mathematics, which currently stands as Mathematics 1MA. Upon completion of this course and other courses, you are eligible to apply for a place in your preferred program should you wish to do so.

This is achieved through a process of Internal Transfer, offered twice each year for most programs. Internal Transfer is a competitive process. You are advised to maintain a high GPA and successfully meet the prerequisites of your preferred program.

Certain programs are better suited to certain pathways. For instance, Sports Engineering is a good option for students without Specialist Mathematics looking to transfer into Mechanical Engineering while Avionics and Electronic Systems is well suited to students without Specialist Mathematics looking to transfer into Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, students are advised to consult the Faculty Office for further advice on alternative pathways.

Consider Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Science.

This is a highly flexible program offered by the School of Mathematical Sciences. The flexibility of this program allows you to mimic the plan of your preferred program. This means that the courses you undertake can be counted towards your preferred program.

If successful in gaining a place in the program, complete the courses equivalent to Specialist Mathematics, which currently stands as Mathematics 1MA. This program also allows you to build up Physics if required. Upon completion of the necessary prerequisites and other courses, you are eligible to apply for a place in your preferred program should you wish to do so.

Don’t have a high enough TER for Engineering?

What are your options?

Consider the  Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Science, Bachelor Computer Science, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts  programs as preferences on your SATAC application. If successful in gaining a place in one of these programs talk to the Faculty Office about the best courses to undertake to build up your GPA before applying for Internal Transfer. Internal Transfer is a competitive process. You are advised to maintain a high GPA (65 or higher) and successfully meet the prerequisites of your preferred program. An advantage of this pathway is that good students generally continue in a combined or double degree program so there is no disadvantage in the time taken to complete studies.

No Mathematical Studies?

The Maths Learning Service offers two courses that can help you:

  1. MathsStart
Covers SACE Stage 1 Mathematical Studies. Designed for anyone wishing to refresh or learn more mathematics. Also suitable as preparation for MathsTrack.
  2. MathsTrack
Covers SACE Stage 2 Mathematical Studies. Students that successfully complete MathsTrack are deemed to have satisfied the prerequisite of SACE Stage 2 Mathematical Studies.

For more information contact the Maths Learning Service on (08) 8303 5862.

Didn’t get in to the Engineering program you wanted?

In the event of this you are advised to consult the Faculty Office on (08) 8303 6476, as there are many alternative pathways.

For example, if you are concerned that you may not be offered a place in the Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering you should consider adding the Bachelor of Civil and Structural Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering or Architectural Engineering to your SATAC preferences. If successful, you can then look to apply for Internal Transfer into your preferred program down the track. The Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is also an excellent option, allowing students to mimic the Mining program, and by achieving a high GPA, apply for Internal Transfer after one semester or one year.

As another example, students wishing to enrol into Aerospace Engineering but not made an offer could apply for a place in the Bachelor of Mechanical, Mechatronic, Automotive, Sustainable Energy or Sports Engineering. As these programs are from the same School as Aerospace Engineering they have virtually identical first and second years. This allows students to complete similar courses, obtain a competitive GPA and apply for transfer into their ideal program.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, students are advised to consult the Faculty Office for further advice on alternative pathways.

Can I transfer into a different program once I am enrolled?

Engineering programs

Students are required to meet the prerequisite criteria for the program and additionally:

  1. Students who have completed up to 4 years of full-time study or equivalent can be considered on the basis of their TER or their GPA, whichever is better of the two. As a guide, students require average uni results above 65 with no fails in order to be considered for admission to the program. In order to take advantage of the GPA, students must have completed a minimum of 0.5 of full-time study (i.e. 12 units). It is wise to advise students to aim higher than a 65 as programs are highly competitive.
  2. Students who have completed less than 0.5 of full-time study will be required to meet the TER cut-off for the program in order to be considered for admission to the program.
  3. Students who have completed more than 4 years of full-time study or equivalent will be assessed on the basis of their GPA only.

Bachelor of Computer Science

Students who have some (or even completed) tertiary studies will be eligible to be considered on the basis of their TER or GPA, whichever is the better of the two.

Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Science

Students who have some (or have even completed) tertiary studies will be eligible to be considered on the basis of their TER or GPA, whichever is the better of the two.
