Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Advanced)*

Do I need to complete prerequisite year 12 subjects?

No, not unless you wish to major in Chemistry or Physics in which case the following Level 1 (SACE First Year) prerequisites apply:

Chemistry Major: Chemistry (it is possible to follow a Chemistry major without this prerequisite but this option is dependent on your first year university results.  Please contact us for more details on this)

Physics Major: Physics, Maths Studies and Specialist Maths

Bachelor of Science (Pre-Veterinary)

What if I don’t have a high enough ATAR?

If you are worried that you might not receive a high enough ATAR for the Bachelor of Science (Pre-Veterinary) then you should consider choosing the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science) as a second preference. The Bachelor of Science is another option that can offer students a pathway into studies in Animal Science. There will be limited numbers of tertiary transfer places into the Bachelor of Science (Pre-Veterinary) program so entry will be extremely competitive.

What if I didn't complete the prerequisite year 12 subjects?

If you didn't complete the prerequisite year 12 subjects for the Bachelor of Science (Pre-Veterinary) degree you can apply for the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science). The Bachelor of Science (Animal Science) offers pathways for students without prior Chemistry or Maths and has no prerequisites. There is an opportunity for students in the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science) to transfer into Level 2 of the Pre-Veterinary degree. Entry into Level 2 will be extremely competitive, and students must complete all the Level 1 studies to a high standard, with a minimum of a Credit achieved for Biology and Chemistry.

Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science)
Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology)
Bachelor of Science (Ecochemistry)
Bachelor of Science (Molecular and Drug Design)
Bachelor of Science (Molecular Biology)
Bachelor of Science (Nanoscience and Materials)
Bachelor of Science (Advanced)*

What if I don’t have a high enough ATAR for one of the degrees listed above?

If you are worried that you might not receive a high enough ATAR for one of the degrees listed above then you should consider indicating the Bachelor of Science as a second preference. In the first year of the Bachelor of Science you can undertake the core courses required for the degrees listed. If you pass these courses to a minimum of a Credit average you may be eligible to transfer to your prefereed degree in Level 2.

If you do not achieve the required grades at Level 1 for tertiary transfer the flexibility of the Bachelor of Science still allows you to study similar areas of interest.

What if I didn't complete the prerequisite year 12 subjects?

If you don’t have the prerequisite subjects for the degrees listed above you can apply for a program that does not have prerequisites.

The Bachelor of Science* allows you to study similar areas and also offers the opportunity for students to possibly transfer into Level 2 of your preferred degree. Entry into Level 2 will be extremely competitive, and students will need to complete all the Level 1 studies at a high standard with Biology and Chemistry/Foundation of Chemistry completed to at least a credit average.  (Note for Biotechnology, if successful you would need to undertake two level 1 core courses, which may increase the duration of your degree).

If you do not achieve the required grades at Level 1 for tertiary transfer, the flexibility of the Bachelor of Science still allows you to study similar areas of interest.

Other Science programs with no pre-requisites that you may also wish to consider, include:

These programs allow the study of Level 1 Biology and Chemistry/Foundations of Chemistry.

*Please note, the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Advanced) have no pre-requisites, unless you wish to major in Chemistry or Physics, in which case the following level 1 (first year) pre-requisites apply:

Chemistry major: Chemistry.  It is possible to follow a Chemistry major without meeting the pre-requisite but depends on your Level 1 university results – please check with your Course Coordinator.

Physics major: Physics, Maths Studies and Specialist Maths

Bachelor of Science (High Performance Computational Physics) (Hons)
Bachelor of Science (Laser Physics and Technology)
Bachelor of Science (Space Science and Astrophysics)

What if I don’t have a high enough ATAR for one of the three degrees listed above?

If you are worried that you might not receive a high enough ATAR for entry to the degrees listed above then you should consider putting the Bachelor of Science as a second preference. In the first year of the Bachelor of Science you can undertake the same Level 1 courses as these degrees. Entry into Level 2 will be extremely competitive and students will need to complete all the Level 1 studies at a high standard, with Physics and Maths completed to at least a Credit standard.

If you do not achieve the required grades at Level 1 for tertiary transfer to your preferred degree, the flexibility of the Bachelor of Science still allows you to study similar areas of interest.

TAFE SA Pathways

TAFE SA courses, from Cert IV and above, are also a possible pathway into Science and can be the perfect stepping stone between school and university. The University currently has more than 200 TAFE Credit Transfer Pathways and even more Entry Pathways on offer and these are being added to regularly. Three Science degrees currently have TAFE pathways - the  Bachelor of Food and Nutrition Science, the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science), where credit for relevant studies undertaken at TAFE can be awarded; for example, a Diploma of Geoscience will get you 1 year of credit in the Bachelor of Science
