an insight to Chinese astrology and the year ahead

Join us for our first cultural seminar for 2008 and discover what is in store for the Year of the Rat, its significance, and the role of astrology in contemporary Chinese culture.
Chinese astrology is an ancient and profound system of divination which can be amazingly accurate. This seminar, open to anyone with an interest in language and culture, will look at many of the aspects of Chinese astrology, especially with regard to its relevance in modern society. In addition to the forecast for 2008, there will also be a retrospective on the year that was as a backdrop to the year to come.
Topics will include:
The Zodiac and the Elements
An insight into the origin of Chinese astrology and introduction to the Zodiac and the Elements - the various animals, elements and the concept of 'yin' and 'yang'. Links between individual characteristics / personality traits, the astrological cycle, and with other sciences, will be discussed.
The role of Chinese astrology
The Chinese view on astrology - a look at the prominence of astrology in the Chinese culture, how events are viewed according to the when they occur, and evolution of its relevance from ancient times to modern society.
2008 - The Year of the Granary Rat
Poetically 2008, the Year of the Granary Rat, will be marked by complete and sudden changes in direction. There is also an admonition for people to guard their resources well, which is of interest given current trends within the stock market. This seminar will look at a typical Year of the Rat and 2008 - the portents, projections, positives and precautions. A retrospective look at the last Year of the Granary Rat (1948) - did it unfold as predicted?
Difference and similarities
Differences and similarities of Chinese astrology to those from other societies such as Indian, Vietnamese, Tibetan and Western cultures.
There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and participate in discussion on the various topics.

Presenter Profile:
Malvin Artley
Malvin Artley is an engineer, technician, astrologer and esotericist with an educational background in physics and fine arts. He is the author of Bodies of Fire: An Exploration of the Lesser Chakra System and he has authored numerous articles on a variety of esoteric subjects.
His primary focus over the past 25 years has been on the sciences as they express occultism and with bridging work between the two. His special interests are the human subtle energy system and all the chakras, or energy centers, physics and technology, astronomy and all aspects of Chinese occultism. He has co-authored The Imperial Astrologer, a Chinese astrology program in concert with Esoteric Technologies, producers of Solar Fire astrology software. He has done extensive work with Chinese astrology and the cycles they use and seeks to synthesize the great Western and Oriental systems on such matters.
Malvin has been a practicing astrologer for more than a decade. He is an accredited member of the American Federation of Astrologers. He currently works in the engineering trade and sends out periodic emails about astrological happenings and developments.
